Inside the rain free movie poster. We can't all fall asleep. someone's gotta drive the car. Goodnight from Florida. Inside the rain free movie black package. Rain cloud maker: Makes rainbows too Kowalski, analysis. The first thing you notice about Rain Room, the sure blockbuster installation that opened at MoMA on Friday, is the tropical humidity. The second thing is the sound from hundreds of gallons of water pouring from an artificial ceiling. Finally, after your eyes adjust to the darkness, you actually see it: Rain Room, a 1, 000-square-foot space that’s in a state of perpetual downpour. Except you never get wet. Thanks to eight motion sensors installed above the space, the water pouring from the ceiling shivvers to avoid you as you move through the room, leaving you completely dry. The sensation of walking through a wall of water and staying dry is uncanny—and watching how people react is part of the fun. “Rain Room [pushes] people outside their comfort zones, extracting their base auto-responses and playing with intuition, ” explain its creators, the London technology and art collective rAndom International. “Observing how these unpredictable outcomes will manifest themselves, and the experimentation with this world of often barely perceptible behavior and its simulation, is our main driving force. ” The designers at rAndom International have spent the past three years developing the technology that powers the installation. Recreating rain, you see, isn’t as easy as it sounds. Water dropping from twenty feet above feels very different than rain dropping from clouds thousands of feet overhead, for example. And circulating thousands of gallons of water through public space has its own unique sanitation issues. To deal with both hurdles, MoMA’s team built Rain Room its own building, wedged into an empty lot next door to the ill-fated American Folk Art Museum. The artists, for their part, have stayed mum on the specifics of the technology—they argue that it’s all part of the magic. Rain Room is the kind of installation that museums dream of: wonderfully experiential and accessible to almost every sort of audience, with a New Aesthetic street cred to back it up. Like New Museum’s Carsten Holler exhibit, or the Guggenheim’s (conceptual) trampoline, Rain Room is a taste of things to come for MoMA, which (like all museums) is struggling to reach new audiences and make the most of what it has. All of that aside, on a hot Sunday afternoon, Rain Room is hard not to love. Check it out until July 28. [ MoMA].

I've gone through this several times. I have server bipolar, server anxiety ptsd. I've been waiting oon a movie like this that I can relate to, Thank you for this movie. No race was ever won on the first corner Seems like this guy has never watched F1.

On a sunny afternoon in New York City, it seems ironic that hundreds of people were waiting in line to purposely get caught in a torrential downpour. But the Rain Room isn’t just your average water park. The latest installation at the Museum of Modern Art allows visitors to walk through pouring rain without ever getting wet. … A quiet stroll through the room feels God like – it really does feel as if you command the weather. The experience is part of MoMA’s “EXPO 1: New York, ” a summer-long exhibition that explores the huge environmental challenges we face as a species alongside the unprecedented technological achievements of this generation. For its part, the Rain Room is an immersive environment that allows visitors to “experience how it might feel to control the rain. ” Walking into the room feels like entering a huge, dark shower, but take a step into the rain and the falling sheets of water disappear. You can roam the space without getting at all wet. Designed by England’s Random International, the Rain Room’s secret is in 3D camera sensors installed across the dark room. Though artist Hannes Koch won’t reveal all the details (it’s “part of the magic”), he says the sensors recognize movements and detect objects – allowing rain to stop falling at precise spots at which the objects stand. When the sensors realize the object has moved away, the rain returns. Each spot gets an approximate five-foot radius of dryness, which is why the Rain Room is limited to 10 visitors at any given time. If the room were to fill up, the rain would stop altogether. The sensors aren’t the only trick within the Rain Room. The Random International team spent three years perfecting the installation by making sure the sheets of pouring rain fell as straight down as possible. Unlike natural rain from clouds, the water drops have to descend uniformly; without the straight downpour, the exhibit wouldn’t work. It also helps that, with the right camera settings, the vertical rain creates a unique and photographic experience. It is estimated that the Rain Room uses at least 260 gallons of water per minute during the exhibition. Inside the Rain Room, the camera system is not exactly foolproof – you can still run around and get ahead of the sensors if you want to get wet. But a quiet stroll through the room feels God-like – it really does feel as if you command the weather. The experience is breathtaking, weird, and beautiful all at the same time. Hollywood has always romanticized kissing in the rain, but in reality, you’d be lucky if you don’t inhale water drops up your nose. In the Rain Room, couples can enjoy that magical moment without ever ruining their date outfits – or get their camera equipments destroyed while capturing the experience. The Rain Room at MoMA runs between now to July 28. Be prepared: The exhibit is first-come, first-served. There is no time limit for how long you can spend inside the Rain Room so it could take hours before you’re even close to the front door. This is just like that episode of Seinfeld where George was at the birthday party and he pushed everyone out the way when he thought there was a fire. And then he's explaining to paramedics and everyone at the party he was trying to go get help. And oh look, Julia Louis Dreyfus (Elaine) is in this movie. I wonder if she thought about that when reading script.

Reading the reviews, I'm quite surprised to discover so many early Aeronatical historians. I must have missed the 10 minutes Mrs. Richards spent covering Mr. Glaisher's contribution to early meteorology.
Hollywood has a reputation. As the saying goes, Don't let some facts get in the way of a good story." While they certainly took some liberties here, it does make the story compelling, if not exactly accurate. Any body upset about the character changes should take note they took some fairly large creative liberties with the flight itself, and how much our heroine had to brave to save the occupants.
But it was exciting! I lost my stomach numerous times with the endeavors of Felicity Jones's character. The story was tightly woven together with a redeeming arc and heart warming finish.
If you're looking for a good story, albeit a fictional one, with suspense and light romance, this one is certain to take you a bit higher.

The girl in the thumbnail has the biggest back 🤣🤣. I can't stand the bashing of this movie by some snowflakey viewers with an agenda, hiding behind the self righteousness of denouncing what they see as feminist left revisionism of history, as if we all but relied on movies to learn about history. If you want to know what really happened I have a suggestion: open a history book.
This is a work of fiction, and should be taken as fictitiously as, let's say, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. Yet for some reason a certain category of viewers, vociferous and roaming at the mouth for historical veracity are instead being intolerant of artistic freedom, showing their true colors for what they are: mad, ridiculously perceiving yet another imaginary cultural loss for the white male's impact on history.
This movie wasn't bad. It was entertaining with great costumes and tension, and it should be seen for what it is: pure entertainment.

The Film As a feat of filmmaking, 1917 is a monumental achievement. The way it creates the illusion of a ‘single take’ gives us a new way of understanding the horrors of war and a level of shared-experience intensity that precious few other war movies can compete with. It’s less successful, though, on a narrative level. The ‘one take’ approach imposes a few limitations and contrivances on the story that sometimes not even the greatest filmmaking smoke and mirrors can completely hide, while the whole underlying premise of the story just doesn’t quite convince. The amount of detail visible in shots like this on the 1917 4K Blu-ray is stunning. Photo: 1917, Universal Pictures In the end, though, 1917 is all about the experience. About throwing you face first into the devastating horror of a now scarcely imaginable type of warfare in a uniquely immediate and inescapable way. And in that respect - especially with the support of the sensational picture quality and soundtrack of the 4K Blu-ray - it succeeds fantastically well. And it looks it. Detail levels are immense. The texture and minutiae in everything from the meticulously recreated trenches and no man’s land sets to the mud- and blood-spattered uniforms of the soldiers and the poignantly rich, grassy pastures of the ironically beatific countryside looks incredibly lifelike and immediate. The detail and depth in this shot is something to behold in 4K. What’s more, this lifelike sharpness applies equally to foreground and background image elements, combining with the long, seemingly cut-free shots to create a mesmerising feeling of ‘being there’. In this respect, in fact, 1917 arguably delivers the single most compelling proof yet of just how important 4K is. After all, here it doesn’t just make the picture quality objectively better. It also adds to the impact and immediacy of a film that’s all about trying to recreate for the audience the actual experience of being at war in 1917. The consistency of the detailing is another huge factor in 1917 qualifying as a, if no THE, reference grade 4K Blu-ray disc. It never slides into softness, even during the film’s occasionally ultra-dark sequences, such as the one where Schofield meets the lady looking after the baby beneath the ruined occupied town. There’s no sign of the compression artefacts and noise that were so noticeable in the dark moorland and chapel scenes towards the end of Sam Mendes’ Skyfall 4K Blu-ray ( reviewed here), either. Black levels go extremely deep, but never to an unnatural, forced degree. There’s always enough detail visible to make the blackness feel authentic rather than like any sort of hollow ‘cheat’ in the filming or mastering process. The lack of general fizzing noise during these ultra-dark moments is also remarkable - and testament again to the high resolution of the master. The 1917 4K Blu-ray's HDR really springs to life with the ruined town at night sequence. It likely does no harm to the extreme detail and clarity of the picture that the transfer runs at a very high bit-rate. During scenes that contain a lot of background detail and movement data rates routinely exceed 80Mpbs, punching right up to 100Mbps at times. The only time the datarate drops as low as 40-50Mbps (still quite high by the standards of some 4K Blu-rays) is with shots that contain a lot of monotone sky. Where, in other words, the repetitive nature of the sky makes heavier compression temporarily possible without causing obvious artefacting. Although the transfer’s HDR and expanded colour work isn’t as aggressively, immediately stellar as its 4K clarity, it still plays its part in creating the film’s all-important realism. The subtleties in the various brown and tan shades of the soldiers’ uniforms looks almost miraculously refined on the 4K Blu-ray, while the green pastures, muddy battlegrounds and leaden skies all look more lifelike thanks to the expanded light range and colour. There’s also more refinement and finesse in the film’s skin tones. This matters in 1917 more than usual, as the film’s remarkable attention to realism extends almost miraculously at times to changes in the actors’ pallor. Check out, in particular, the differing and changing complexions of the two main actors during the traumatic few minutes following the crash of the German plane. Having to clamber over a mountain of rotting bodies is even more unpleasant in 4K. The HDR work is focused on enhancing the gritty realism rather than ‘showing off’. While this ‘cloud day realism’ sees the frame average light level of the HDR10 transfer topping out at a fairly limited 168 nits, though, the transfer’s peak light level of 1000 nits makes its presence felt strongly at times - most notably in the night scenes in the ruined town, and in the flames of the burning barn following the plane crash. As if the technical prowess of 1917 ’s 4K Blu-ray picture wasn’t already exciting enough, Universal has also provided the film in both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision masters alongside the baseline HDR10 one. This means you’ll be able to enjoy the film in dynamic HDR (which provides extra scene by scene data to help your TV deliver the best possible picture quality) regardless of whether your TV supports HDR10+ or Dolby Vision. The extra data available with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision leads to a noticeably punchier, more refined image, especially during the ruined town at night sequence. This is even evident on my high-end reference TVs, but should actually deliver even more emphatic results on cheaper HDR10+ or Dolby Vision supporting models. There’s also a touch more color refinement in the Dolby Vision master, particularly during the film’s darkest scenes. So long as most of the biggest TV brands look set to continue supporting either HDR10+ or Dolby Vision, rather than both, we can only hope that more studios follow Universal’s lead in including dual masters on their 4K Blu-ray releases. Family is all the motivation you need. Are there any problems with the picture quality at all? Well, the amount of camera panning and tracking created by 1917 ’s ‘one-shot’ approach will harshly expose any motion problems (blur, excessive judder) your TV might suffer with. But this is, of course, an issue with your TV, not the 1917 transfer. If I was really determined to find a flaw in 1917 ’s 4K Blu-ray picture, one or two of the film’s CGI ‘painted’ backdrop extensions - especially around the sequence featuring the broken bridge - look a touch soft compared with the blistering sharpness and detail of everything else. But this says more about me needing to get out more than anything genuinely negative about what is, overall, a true standard bearer for the 4K Blu-ray format. Sound quality The 4K and HD Blu-rays of 1917 both get a Dolby Atmos sound mix that’s as reference grade as the 4K disc’s picture quality. The way the mix uses the score, for starters, is nothing short of masterful. It ebbs and flows, rises and falls, shifts tone and tack, and soars and sears in consistently perfect alignment with the onscreen action, always bolstering the all-important illusion that so much of the action you’re witnessing is taking place in real time. The score also imbues the action with an array of emotions and moods that the urgency and filming limitations associated with the ‘one shot’ approach might sometimes have made impossible to create visually. The precision with which the Dolby Atmos mix places the explosions in this famous shot makes it... [+] perfect demo material. The way the score is actually mixed for Atmos is what really seals the deal, though. It’s fed beautifully into all the Atmos channels, building in layers of height, changing width and carefully integrated rear-channel elements to effortlessly create moments of poignancy, confusion, uncertainty and drama. Not to mention a number of climactic crescendos that threaten to rupture your ear drums and shatter your walls as potently as an exploding shell. The expressive and emphatic score is brilliantly mingled with a stunning showcase of Dolby Atmos effects that bring the chaotic atmosphere and epic action into your living room with uncanny and disturbing accuracy. During Schofield’s final dash along the top of the trench, for instance, you don’t just generally hear explosions going off all around him; the sound of each explosion appears to emanate from precisely the correct position. If an explosion takes place off screen to the right, that’s where you hear it. If it lands over Schofield’s left shoulder, that’s where you hear it. If a shell lands in the far distance it sounds further way. If it lands near the camera, it sounds nearer the camera. All while the score builds steadily up to ’11’, shouts and shots abound all around, and projectiles and debris scatter to all corners. Overall this sequence may actually top the opening plane sequence from Overlord as my favorite Dolby Atmos object placement demo sequence to date. The best 'planes flying overhead' Dolby Atmos demo sequence yet? Another classic moment where effects placement is concerned is the dogfight/barn crash sequence, while the shot where a pair of British planes fly overhead from back to front tops all previous ‘planes flying overhead’ Atmos demo moments. You can even hear the slightly staggered position of the two planes as they roar across your ceiling. To seal the stunning audio deal, 1917 ’s Dolby Atmos dynamic range is colossal. Thumpingly deep bass shares the soundstage with sometimes painfully (in a good way) intense and shrill trebles, as well as absolutely everything in between. Truly flawless stuff. Extra features In some ways, at least, 1917 ’s 4K Blu-ray continues to spoil us with its extras. For starters, they’re all found on the 4K Blu-ray as well as the HD one, so you don’t have to swap discs to enjoy them. They also boast two excellent commentary tracks: one by Sam Mendes, and one by cinematographer, Roger Deakins. Both are must listens if you want to understand all the film-making tricks that went into delivering the ‘one shot’ look. Deakins’ recall of all the lighting, camera, rigging and editing that went into each shot is particularly incredible. But Mendes adds lots of other detail about the directing and writing process, so that there’s surprisingly little overlap between the two separately recorded commentary tracks. Besides the commentaries, Universal has provided four ‘making of’ featurettes. The Weight Of The World focuses on Sam Mendes’ impact on the film, from the original idea through to writing and direction. It’s well constructed and interesting, but disappointingly short at under five minutes. Allied Forces: Making 1917 is a slightly more substantial (12 minute) look through the massive collaborative effort required to recreate the war-torn landscape and deliver the film’s ‘one shot’ feel. Again, this documentary is fascinating and packed with great behinds the scenes footage, but could have done with being longer. Like, two hours longer. The 1917 4K Blu-ray box art. The Score Of 1917 briefly (four minutes) covers the work of Thomas Newman in developing and recording the film’s perfectly timed music. In The Trenches focuses on the actors, and again has easily enough going on to keep you interested for its seven minute running time. Last but not least is Recreating History, which spends an enjoyable 10 minutes looking at the efforts of Production Designer Dennis Gassner in creating the film’s insanely great and convincing locations. Verdict While 1917 ’s story doesn’t quite hold up, as an immersive and intense recreation of the horrors of the first world war it’s an experience not to be missed. Especially in all its 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos glory. — If you found this article useful, you might also like these: ‘Knives Out’ 4K Blu-ray Review: Sharp ‘Jojo Rabbit’ 4K Blu-ray Review: Say Hello To My Hitler Friend ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ 4K Blu-ray Review - Game Changer ‘Saving Private Ryan’ 4K Blu-ray Review - God Of War ‘Charlie’s Angels’ (2019) 4K Blu-ray Review - All That Glitters.

The new drama 1917, which director Sam Mendes wrote based on his grandfather’s stories about World War I, was not technically filmed in a single take. If you pay attention, you can see places where the film fudges a little. But the film does a good approximation of that technique, which makes it feel as if you’re living the events of the movie in “real time” and has been used in movies in the past, most recently in the 2014 Best Picture winner Birdman. In the case of 1917, the one-shot technique is used to tell a story about two young British privates (George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman) who are tasked by their general (Colin Firth) with taking a message from their trenches and across no man’s land to Colonel MacKenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch), who’s leading his men into a giant trap. It’s a nearly impossible task, but they faithfully go for it, encountering all kinds of peril along the way with other soldiers (including Richard Madden, Mark Strong, and Andrew Scott). It’s the first film that experienced director Mendes ( Skyfall, American Beauty, Road to Perdition) has also written, and I spoke with him by phone about why he decided to make the film seem as if it’s one continuous shot, as well as the challenges of casting a movie like this. George MacKay crouches in a trench in 1917. Universal Pictures Alissa Wilkinson How did you decide upon the “one shot” concept for 1917? Sam Mendes I wanted to tell this story in two hours of “real time. ” So I felt like it was a natural thing, to lock the audience into the men’s experiences. In a movie that operates more like a ticking-clock thriller at times, I wanted an audience to feel every second passing and take every step with them, and also be aware of geography and distance and physical difficulty. The feeling that you are going to have to live through the story with them is accentuated by not cutting. There are other movies that use the “one shot” idea — many people know of Birdman, or the Hitchcock movie Rope — but while watching 1917, I found myself thinking about books that follow characters through a day in “real time, ” like Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, or James Joyce’s Ulysses. The big difference is that those books follow one character, and then they pass another character on the street, and then they start to follow that other character, more like Birdman. In 1917, you’re sticking with just one or two characters the whole time. Did that make it especially challenging for you or the actors? It’s challenging to keep it from becoming repetitive. Even though, as you say, it’s sticking with one or two characters, ultimately the film is constantly shifting your relationship with them, and so the point of view isn’t always subjective. Sometimes you see them, but don’t see what they see. Sometimes you see what they see before they do. Sometimes it’s very intimate and very subjective; sometimes it’s very objective, and you see them quite small in a big landscape. So, there’s a dance between the camera and the characters and the landscapes, all three of which are moving all the time. That [cinematic] language was something that [cinematographer] Roger Deakins and I really worked hard to kind of develop. George MacKay in 1917. It’s a weird paradox, because on the one hand, we personally experience our lives as if we’re in a one-shot movie. On the other hand, that style and perspective are not what movies have taught us to expect. No. But you have to ask yourself why the grammar of film has developed the way it has. And it is an interesting question. We experience life much closer to one longer continuous shot. So we might expect the grammar of film to be the same. But the grammar of film was developed because cameras were not able to do what human beings can. They were too big. They were too bulky. They only shot on film. You had to cut at a certain point. That’s no longer the case. So there is a way of communicating now, which is not using the traditional tools, the traditional grammar of cinema that developed the last one hundred years. [ 1917 is] not shot in a way that’s designed to draw attention to itself. I don’t really want people to think about the camera. If you’re aware of it for the first 10 minutes, then hopefully thereafter you forget about it, and you just watch the story. There’s also all of these short appearances by famous actors, playing figures who in some cases would be kind of celebrities to these young soldiers — captains and commanders. How did you go about casting for those roles? We cast who I thought were the best people for the roles, rather than thinking, Well, I need some famous actors. Of course, you’re not unaware that you’re making a fairly large movie, and you want people to come and see it. And that doesn’t hurt. But I wanted people with that natural instant authority. Colin Firth, or Benedict Cumberbatch, or Andrew Scott — they have that skill, to be able to impose themselves upon the scene almost instantly and hit the ground running. I was also trying to get that feeling of two relatively ordinary soldiers intersecting with these lives that are grounded in theirs, in a way, but have a higher status. Part of the reason we cast young and relatively unknown actors [as the main characters] was to give the feeling that these are two young men among 2 million, and that they’re — this is a weird thing to say — not particularly special. There’s an ordinariness to them. They’re intersecting with the lives that are writ large, in a different way from theirs. So that was how I decided to do it. I talked to [the more famous actors] about the project as a whole, what the overall goal of the film was, instead of their individual roles. I think some of those guys are relieved to not carry the burden of the whole film for a change, to play supporting roles, and to be in something that they believe in, but they don’t have to take full responsibility for, or spend any time marketing, either. And once you persuade one “heavyweight, ” like a Colin Firth, to do it, then you could call up Benedict and say, “Colin Firth’s doing one of these characters, ” and then you get both of them. It becomes easier and easier as you get further along. So it takes one person to say yes, and then you have a kind of domino effect. Benedict Cumberbatch in 1917. How is the rehearsal process different for a movie like this from other films? We couldn’t do anything until we had rehearsed, because we had to measure the distance that every scene took. We had to measure the journey. So we couldn’t build a trench until we’d walked the distance that the trench needed to be, and then apply the same rule to the no man’s land and the quarries, and the fields and orchards and farm houses and canals and towns at night. All of them could not be built or even conceived until we knew how long they should be. And we didn’t know how long they should be until we’d acted it. So we started the process by rehearsing in empty fields, holding scripts, and marking out the journey with flags and poles. And only then were we able to actually move forward. So we were rehearsing for months off and on, but really what we were doing is including the actors in what would be a normal pre-production process, for six or eight months. We had them there from day one. That, frankly, is a luxury not normally afforded, because actors are busy. But I made sure that when I offered these two lads the role, they understood it was a long job, and that they had to be there as part of the team, from the very beginning of pre-production. So that’s how we did it. You’re an experienced theater director — was there any way in which directing this film drew on those same directing muscles? I certainly I used that same muscle. I was having to judge rhythm and pace and tempo without cutting. And that’s what one does all the time in theater. I’m not unused to telling a story that lasts two hours or two-and-a-half hours, with no breaks. On the other hand, the landscape of the film was constantly moving — atmosphere, light, conditions — and the relationship between the camera and the actors was constantly changing in a way that it doesn’t on stage. In theater, the relationship between the viewer and the people being looked at is pretty consistent, whereas here it was changing all the time. So in another way, it was just the opposite of the theater experience, and very cinematic. This film was a weird mixture of the two. 1917 opened in limited theaters on Christmas Day. It will open nationwide on January 10. This conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

It’s a typical World War I battle scene, but flipped 90 degrees. Photo: Universal Pictures When it comes to 20th-century military conflicts, there’s no question which one Hollywood prefers. Cinematically, World War II has everything: dramatic battles, dastardly villains, a pivotal role played by the United States, and ultimately, a resounding victory for the good guys. Its predecessor has proven a tougher subject for movies to crack, especially American ones. (For the British, it occupies a more prominent place in the collective historical memory. ) We remember World War I as a military stalemate that exemplified the utter meaninglessness of war, and while the day-to-day drudgery and existential despair of life in the trenches inspired plenty of lasting poetry and literature, it doesn’t necessarily lend itself to blockbusters. What grabs modern audiences about the conflict is either the gross stuff — Dan Carlin’s Hardcore Histories podcast dives deep into the disgusting sights, smells, and sensations of the Western Front — or the sense of grand tragedy. When they do show up onscreen, World War I battles traditionally share a similar pattern: Our heroes climb out a trench, run a pitifully short distance, then get machine-gunned to death. Think of the famous ending of the BBC’s Blackadder Goes Forth, in which Rowan Atkinson and company go over the top, their grim fates elided with a dissolve to a field of poppies: Or the heartbreaking conclusion to Peter Weir’s Gallipoli, which follows Australian troops in the war’s Middle Eastern theater: More recently, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse gave us both a doomed cavalry charge and a doomed infantry charge. Even Wonder Woman barely makes it five feet before being struck by a German bullet that would have been fatal for a non-superhero: In other words, if you’re making a World War I movie that doesn’t end with your heroes dead or grievously wounded, you’d better have a good explanation. These depressing depictions are in keeping with what became the dominant historical narrative of the First World War in Britain and the U. S., which painted the troops on the ground as victims of their own generals, idiots who senselessly sent their men into a meat grinder. However, this view has come in for reappraisal as military historians like Brian Bond argue that, contrary to popular belief, the war as a whole was “necessary and successful ” (though that wider lens in turn has been critiqued for erasing the experience of those who actually served). With the Great War recently celebrating its centenary, projects like Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old have attempted to sidestep these historical debates by concentrating solely on the day-to-day experiences of the men in the trenches, avoiding making any wider claims about what, if anything, the war itself meant. Into this fraught landscape steps Sam Mendes’s 1917, which is trying to accomplish that rarest of feats: telling a feel-good World War I story. The director based his film on the memories of his grandfather, who served as a messenger on the Western Front, and that family connection seems to have left him determined to present a version of the war where an individual soldier could still act heroically, rather than simply be a lamb for the slaughter. “Other people have made that movie, the blood and guts, ” the movie’s Oscar-nominated production designer Dennis Gassner told me earlier this month. “This wasn’t that. This is a story about integrity, the willingness to do anything even in the harshest conditions. ” Mendes has spoken of the film as a tribute to those who made it back home, which requires him to pull off the tonal balancing act of reclaiming the war as an arena for nobility and sacrifice, while not glorifying the conflict itself. Never is that tension more clear than in the film’s conclusive action setpiece, which is tasked with giving viewers a happy ending in a conflict that offered few uncomplicated victories. 1917 follows two British soldiers, Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield ( George MacKay), who are handed the perilous task of traversing no-man’s-land to deliver a message to another regiment calling off their attack. (Though the plot is fiction, the German withdrawal that acts as the inciting incident actually happened. ) The film’s first act supplies many of the genre tropes we’ve come to associate with the First World War. Blake is a cheerful naif who still hopes to be “home by Christmas, ” while Schofield has the thousand-yard stare of a shell-shocked Somme veteran. They navigate trench networks that have evolved into a microcosm of society, and the dialogue covers familiar territory: unclear orders, no supplies, thousands of men dying to gain a single inch. An officer on the front line (played by Fleabag ’s Andrew Scott, in the film’s best performance) has been so numbed by constant fire that he no longer knows what day it is. Once Blake and Schofield go over the top, the no-man’s-land sequence is a horror show, as the men must trace a path past a dead horse, plentiful corpses, and massive craters that scar the landscape. In 1917 ’s purest gross-out moment, Schofield accidentally plunges his bloody hand into the open stomach of a dead soldier. After they cross through the German trenches — a sequence that starts with the men staring at bags of shit and only gets more harrowing from there — Blake and Schofield arrive in the open countryside. It’s a view not often seen in World War I movies, which rarely venture beyond the trenches, and it provides an opportunity for the film to slow down and relax. The soldiers get into a debate about whether there’s any meaning to be found in the war. Blake, who, true to his name, is the romantic of the pair, has learned that Schofield traded his Somme medal for a bottle of wine, and berates him. “You should have taken it home, ” Blake says. “You should have given it to your family. Men have died for that. If I’d got a medal I’d take it back home. Why didn’t you take it home? ” Schofield disagrees, with the bitterness of a war poet: “Look, it’s just a bit of bloody tin. It doesn’t make you special. It doesn’t make any difference to anyone. ” Subsequent events seem to prove Schofield correct: Blake is stabbed by a German pilot whose life he’d just saved, and his prolonged, pitiful death carries no meaning and no glory. But as Schofield continues on alone, the sheer difficulty of the obstacles he faces spurs him to carry on. He’s shot by an enemy sniper, and only narrowly survives. He stumbles upon a German sentry, and kills the lad in close combat. Like Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant, he evades his pursuers by jumping into a river, at which point he goes over a waterfall and nearly drowns. Mendes gives Schofield plentiful opportunities to give up — including one slightly eye-rolling sequence with a young woman and a baby — but he never does. It’s an abstract, existential view of the Great War: The struggle itself is what gives the experience meaning. Then, in the film’s closing sequence, Mendes takes the tropes of trench warfare and twists them 90 degrees. Schofield has finally made it to the regiment he needs to find, only to discover that their attack has already begun. He tries to push his way through a crowded trench — while Dunkirk was a movie about standing in line, 1917 is a movie about cutting in line — but it’s no use. He won’t be able to deliver the message, and hundreds of men will die as a result. Unless … he takes a shortcut. As the music swells, Schofield decides to go over the top a second time, a sequence that encapsulates both Mendes’s creative revisionism, as well as the sheer scale of his technical undertaking. ( The scene features 50 stuntmen and 450 extras. ) Unlike most onscreen World War I battles, Schofield is not charging out toward the German lines; he’s sprinting across, parallel to the trench. Thematically, too, the final run flips what we’re used to seeing. Our hero is not heading toward the enemy and certain death; he’s going back to his own men, to redemption. In a sequence that has traditionally been cinematic shorthand for futility, Mendes goes for hope. But the film is also careful not to turn this individual triumph into a wider victory. Having defied death by going over the top, Schofield gains his reward: an audience with the officer in charge of the advance (Benedict Cumberbatch). We’ve been set up to see this character as a villain, but the movie gives us something more complicated. This one is just as worn down as his men; the folly of his attack was born out of the hope that this time, things would be different. (With one notable exception, the much-maligned officer class gets a sympathetic treatment in 1917. ) Zoom out, and the movie’s happy ending is not very happy at all. Yes, a massacre has been averted, but the bloody stasis endures. Viewers know the war will continue for another year and a half. 1917 begins with Schofield dozing under a tree, before he’s awoken by Blake, and the two men go to meet the general who gives them their mission. The film’s conclusion offers a mirror of this structure — possibly one reason the film scored that surprise Screenplay nod. Next, Schofield’s arc with Blake comes full circle, as well. Having completed his perilous journey, Schofield searches the casualty tent for Blake’s older brother. After informing the brother of Blake’s death, Schofield hands over his effects to be returned to his family. These mementos are not meaningless, after all. The magnitude of his efforts has brought Schofield around to Blake’s way of thinking. (The bookend effect of these closing scenes is also enhanced by the film’s casting. The two commanders are played by Cumberbatch and Colin Firth, British heartthrobs of two different generations; Blake’s brother is played by Richard Madden, who acted with Dean-Charles Chapman on Game of Thrones. ) Finally, the film ends just as it began, with Schofield enjoying a moment of rest under a tree. This time, he’s alone, but not really: He pulls out a photograph, revealing for the first time that he’s been carrying around a memento of the wife and children waiting at home. There’s an inscription on the back: “Come back to us. ” Finally, the sun rises, and the film fades to black with a dedication to Mendes’s grandfather, “who told us the stories. ” This closing moment of catharsis encapsulates all that’s proven divisive about 1917. While the film has received generally positive reviews, it’s also received a few high-profile dissents from the likes of Richard Brody, Manohla Dargis, and our own Alison Willmore, all of whom have taken issue with the film turning the industrial bloodbath of the Western Front into a celebration of individual perseverance. Of course, sending viewers out on such an emotional high note is also what’s made 1917 our presumptive Oscars front-runner, as the film been hitting voters’ hearts in a way that its predecessors haven’t. And if the film takes home Best Picture over Parasite in two weeks’ time, you can bet that this debate will only intensify. After all, there’s no such thing as an uncomplicated victory. Let’s Talk About the Ending of 1917.

You are here: Home / Blog / Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words One of the shyest Supreme Court Justices speaks candidly in a new documentary that will be released on Friday, Jan. 31: Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words. Thomas is known for staying quiet during Supreme Court oral arguments and giving few, if any, interviews to the press. (He explains the former in the documentary. ) Even those who think they know something of Thomas’s life will likely find some surprises revealed in the film. Thomas speaks of his life born to a poor Georgia family where English was a second language. He went hungry, often had no bed to sleep in and wandered the streets. The film traces how he became interested in seminary, discovered racism in the then-all-white Catholic church culture, and became a radical and “angry black man” (his words). Watch the preview of “Created Equal” by clicking below: In “Created Equal, ” Thomas describes his sharp turnaround from anger and hate to an attitude of love and acceptance. He also talks about his contentious Supreme Court confirmation that was marred by 11th hour accusations lodged by Anita Hill, a former employee, who claimed Thomas had brought up unwanted sexually-tinged conversations with her. Thomas says that because he is conservative, he was viewed as “not the right black man” in the eyes of liberals who targeted him with relentless attacks no matter his accomplishments. Thomas’s wife, Ginni, appears with him in the documentary. To find out where “Created Equal” will be playing, check out the link below: Filmmakers Michael Pack (left), Gina Cappo Pack (center), Faith Jones (right) Below is the description from the filmmaker: With unprecedented access, the producers interviewed Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, Virginia, for over 30 hours of interview time, over many months. Justice Thomas tells his entire life’s story, looking directly at the camera, speaking frankly to the audience. After a brief introduction, the documentary proceeds chronologically, combining Justice Thomas’ first person account with a rich array of historical archive material, period and original music, personal photos, and evocative recreations. Unscripted and without narration, the documentary takes the viewer through this complex and often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience. In 1948, Clarence Thomas was born into dire poverty in Pin Point, Georgia, a Gullah- speaking peninsula in the segregated South. His father abandoned the family when Clarence was two years old. His mother, unable to care for two boys, brought Clarence and his brother, Myers, to live with her father and his wife. Thomas’ grandfather, Myers Anderson, whose schooling ended at the third grade, delivered coal and heating oil in Savannah. He gave the boys tough love and training in hard work. He sent them to a segregated Catholic school where the Irish nuns taught them self-discipline and a love of learning. From there, Thomas entered the seminary, training to be a priest. As the times changed, Thomas began to rebel against the values of his grandfather. Angered by his fellow seminarians’ racist comments following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and disillusioned by the Catholic Church’s general failure to support the civil rights movement, Thomas left the seminary. His grandfather felt Thomas had betrayed him by questioning his values and kicked Thomas out of his house. In 1968, Thomas enrolled as a scholarship student at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. While there, he helped found the Black Student Union and supported the burgeoning Black Power Movement. Then, Thomas’s views began to change, as he saw it, back to his grandfather’s values. He judged the efforts of the left and liberals to help his people to be demeaning failures. To him, affirmative action seemed condescending and ineffective, sending African-American students to schools where they were not prepared to succeed. He watched the busing crisis in Boston tear the city apart. To Thomas, it made no sense. Why, he asked, pluck poor black kids out of their own bad schools only to bus them to another part of town to sit with poor white students in their bad schools? At Yale Law School, he felt stigmatized by affirmative action, treated as if he were there only because of his race, minimizing his previous achievements. After graduating in 1974, he worked for then State Attorney General John Danforth in Missouri, eventually working in the Reagan administration, first running the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Education and then the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 1990, he became a judge on the U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. His confirmation hearings would test his character and principles in the crucible of national controversy. Like the Bork hearings in 1987, the Democrats went after Thomas’ record and his jurisprudence, especially natural law theory, but also attacked his character. When that failed, and he was on the verge of being confirmed, a former employee, Anita Hill, came forth to accuse him of sexual harassment. The next few days of televised hearings riveted the nation. Finally, defending himself against relentless attacks by the Democratic Senators on the committee, Thomas accused them of running “a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas. ” After wall-to-wall television coverage, according to the national polls, the American people believed Thomas by more than a 2-1 margin. Yet, Thomas was confirmed by the closest margin in history, 52-48. In his 27 years on the court, Thomas’s jurisprudence has often been controversial—from his brand of originalism to his decisions on affirmative action and other hot button topics. Critical journalists often point out that he rarely speaks in oral argument. The public remains curious about Clarence Thomas—both about his personal history and his judicial opinions. His 2007 memoir, My Grandfather’s Son, was number one on The New York Times’ bestseller list. Biden has more hair today than he had back then. Those hair plugs really work. Of course, the media never mocked Biden for his hair. So he became a supreme court judge by playing the race card, so whether or not he is guilty or innocent if they dont vote him through they are racist. Loved it xx. Watching as am reading comments... 2020 who is with viva mobilize. Thumbs up if you're here after Pres. Trump used the word lynching to describe the Democrat party's effort to get him out of office. {{meta. fullTitle}}. Thomas is one the worst of our country. Check his record over the years. He votes according to Scalia. Check into his conflicts of interests. Hi-tech lynching, is that what Conservatives call playing the race card. Mr. Thomas' Grandfather sounds like a very wise man. Do as I do, not as I say that is a very hard line to walk as a father. It obviously makes young men successful when applied properly.

Democrats have been consistent over the years- always scumbags. Created equal: clarence thomas in his own words free stream live. He's still denying the truth. Shameful. Created equal: clarence thomas in his own words free stream movie. Clarence Thomas was the black replacement for the legendary Thurgood Marshall. Playing the race card caused sympathetic Democrats to approve Bush's choice. Expect Silent Thomas to remain the angry, bitter, black man until the end. If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Strange how it's been professors who've falsely accused these two conservative justices. You have to hand it to them. They're very tenacious.

As many of us know now, the threat of women in positions of clerical power would reveal the abuses that male priests have inflicted upon their young female & young male congregations children, revealing the threat of exposure to child abuse that is rampant in the Catholic Church. This movie made it clear to me how the abuse of power was a very political & criminal attempt at covering up that sexual abuse. Wow. Joining the dots is heartbreaking, however, necessary for our sanity in a godless world of infidels! God Bless us All who dare to expose these horrific truths. 🤗❤️🙏✌️.
Sexual harassment or racism charges. Radical Democrats use the same playbook every time. Why? Because it works.

Justice Clarence Thomas is great conservative, and I have ALWAYS respected him as a Supreme Court Justice and as a man. Created equal clarence thomas in his own words free stream.

The 1991 Thomas nomination and fight in the senate is what influenced me more than any other political event in American history. After that, I KNEW who the ENEMY was, and that enemy every day confirms since that fight their hatred, poutiness, racism, injustice, violence, selfishness, bitterness, idiocy, totalitarianism, and over the last five years, horniness. The Global/Left/Dem Axis is by far the greatest danger to the USA, its citizens, and its Constitution. Thomas stood tall against the whole machine like the island of Malta besieged for ages. Great man.

Testimony starts at 17:49. God Bless Clarence Thomas. Actually I do believe Anita Hill. But I also believe that Judge Kavanaugh is innocent.

The emergence of streaming media has caused the fall of many DVD rental companies such as Blockbuster. In July 2020, an article from the New York Times published an article about Netflix DVD, No Manches Frida 2s. It was stated that Netflix was continuing their DVD No. No Frida 2s with 5. 3 million customers, which was a significant decrease from the previous year. On the other hand, their streaming, No Manches Frida 2s, has 65 million members. In a March 2020 study that assessed “The Impact of movies of Streaming on Traditional DVD Movie Rentals” it was found that respondents did not buy DVD movies nearly as much, if ever, because streaming had taken over the market. So we get more space adventures, more original story material and more about what will make this 21st MCU movie different from the previous 20 MCU films. Watch Final Space Season 2 — Movie 6, viewers don’t consider the quality of movies to differ significantly between DVDs and online streaming. Problems that according to respondents need to be improved by streaming movies including fast forwarding or rewinding functions, and search functions. This article highlights that streaming quality movies as an industry will only increase in time, because advertising revenues continue to soar on an annual basis across industries, providing incentives for the production of quality content. He is someone we don’t see happening. Still, Brie Larson’s resume is impressive. The actress has been playing on TV and film sets since she was 11 years old. BRRip is a video that has been encoded at HD resolution (usually 1080p) which is then transcribed to SD resolution. Watch FIRST LADY The BD / BRRip Movie in DVDRip resolution looks better, however, because the encoding is from a higher quality source. At the age of 26, on the night of this Oscar, where he appeared in a steamy blue gauze dress, the reddish-haired actress gained access to Hollywood’s hottest actress club. With its classic and secret beauty, this Californian from Sacramento has won the Summit. He was seen on “21 Jump Street” with Channing Tatum, and “Crazy Amy” by Judd Apatow. And against more prominent actresses like Jennifer Lawrence, Gal Gadot or Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson signed a seven-contract deal with Marvel. There is nothing like that with Watch The Curse of La Llorona Free Online, which is signed mainly by women. And it feels. When he’s not in a combination of full-featured superheroes, Carol Danvers FIRST LADYs Nirvana as greedy anti-erotic as possible and proves to be very independent. This is even the key to his strength: if the super hero is so unique, we are told, it is thanks to his ability since FIRST LADY, despite being ridiculed masculine, to stand alone. Too bad it’s not enough to make a film that stands up completely … Errors in scenarios and realization are complicated and impossible to be inspired. There is no sequence of actions that are truly shocking and actress Brie Larson failed to make her character charming. Spending his time displaying scorn and ridicule, his courageous attitude continually weakens empathy and prevents the audience from shuddering at the danger and changes facing the hero. Too bad, because the tape offers very good things to the person including the red cat and young Nick Fury and both eyes (the film took place in the 1990s). In this case, if Samuel Jackson’s rejuvenation by digital technology is impressive, the illusion is only for his face. Once the actor moves or starts the sequence of actions, the stiffness of his movements is clear and reminds of his true age. Details but it shows that digital is fortunately still at a limit. As for Goose, the cat, we will not say more about his role not to “express”. Already the 21st film for stable Marvel Cinema was launched 10 years ago, and while waiting for the sequel to The 100 Season 6 Movie war infinity (The 100 Season 6 Movie, released April 24 home), this new work is a suitable drink but struggles to hold back for the body and to be really refreshing. Let’s hope that following the adventures of the strongest heroes, Marvel managed to increase levels and prove better. #123movies #putlocker #yesmovies #afdah #freemoviesonline #gostream #marvelmoviesinorder #m4ufree #movies123 #123moviesgo #123movies123 #xmovies8 #0123movies #watchmoviesonlinefree #goodmoviesonnetflix #watchmoviesonline #sockshare #moviestowatch #putlocker9 #goodmoviestowatch #watchfreemovies #123movieshub #dragonballsuperbrolyfullmovie #avengersmoviesinorder #bestmoviesonamazonprime #netflixtvshows #hulushows #scarymoviesonnetflix #freemoviewebsites #topnetflixmovies #freemoviestreaming #123freemovies #123movies #verystream #streammango #gostream #gomovies #vmovies #kissmovies #putlocker #openload #flixtor #vicloud #vidoza #popcorn #ymovies #movieninja #cmovies #azmovies #solarmovies #5movies #vxmovies.

He made early coast-to-coast flights, won many flying races, and helped develop instrument flying. [1] Doolittle studied as an undergraduate at University of California, Berkeley, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1922 and earning a doctorate in aeronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1925. [1] [2] He was a flying instructor during World War I and a Reserve officer in the United States Army Air Corps, but he was recalled to active duty during World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for personal valor and leadership as commander of the Doolittle Raid, a bold long-range retaliatory air raid on some of the Japanese main islands on April 18, 1942, four months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The attack was a major morale booster for the United States, and Doolittle was celebrated as a hero. Doolittle was promoted to lieutenant general and commanded the Twelfth Air Force over North America, the Fifteenth Air Force over the Mediterranean, and the Eighth Air Force over Europe. After World War II, he retired and left the air force but remained active in many technical fields, and was eventually promoted to general 26 years after retirement. [3] Early life and education [ edit] Doolittle was born in Alameda, California, and spent his youth in Nome, Alaska, where he earned a reputation as a boxer. [4] His parents were Frank Henry Doolittle and Rosa (Rose) Cerenah Shephard. By 1910, Jimmy Doolittle was attending school in Los Angeles. When his school attended the 1910 Los Angeles International Air Meet at Dominguez Field, Doolittle saw his first airplane. [5] He attended Los Angeles City College after graduating from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, and later won admission to the University of California, Berkeley where he studied in The School of Mines. He was a member of Theta Kappa Nu fraternity, which would merge into Lambda Chi Alpha during the latter stages of the Great Depression. Doolittle took a leave of absence in October 1917 to enlist in the Signal Corps Reserve as a flying cadet; he ground trained at the School of Military Aeronautics (an Army school) on the campus of the University of California, and flight-trained at Rockwell Field, California. Doolittle received his Reserve Military Aviator rating and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Signal Officers Reserve Corps of the U. Army on March 11, 1918. Military career [ edit] During World War I, Doolittle stayed in the United States as a flight instructor and performed his war service at Camp John Dick Aviation Concentration Center ("Camp Dick"), Texas; Wright Field, Ohio; Gerstner Field, Louisiana; Rockwell Field, California; Kelly Field, Texas and Eagle Pass, Texas. Doolittle's service at Rockwell Field consisted of duty as a flight leader and gunnery instructor. At Kelly Field, he served with the 104th Aero Squadron and with the 90th Aero Squadron of the 1st Surveillance Group. His detachment of the 90th Aero Squadron was based at Eagle Pass, patrolling the Mexican border. Recommended by three officers for retention in the Air Service during demobilization at the end of the war, Doolittle qualified by examination and received a Regular Army commission as a 1st Lieutenant, Air Service, on July 1, 1920. On May 10, 1921, he was engineering officer and pilot for an expedition recovering a plane that had force-landed in a Mexican canyon on February 10 during a transcontinental flight attempt by Lieut. Alexander Pearson. Doolittle reached the plane on May 3 and found it serviceable, then returned May 8 with a replacement motor and four mechanics. The oil pressure of the new motor was inadequate and Doolittle requested two pressure gauges, using carrier pigeons to communicate. The additional parts were dropped by air and installed, and Doolittle flew the plane to Del Rio, Texas himself, taking off from a 400-yard airstrip hacked out of the canyon floor. Subsequently, he attended the Air Service Mechanical School at Kelly Field and the Aeronautical Engineering Course at McCook Field, Ohio. Having at last returned to complete his college degree, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley in 1922, and joined the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Doolittle was one of the most famous pilots during the inter-war period. In September 1922, he made the first of many pioneering flights, flying a de Havilland DH-4 – which was equipped with early navigational instruments – in the first cross-country flight, from Pablo Beach (now Jacksonville Beach), Florida, to Rockwell Field, San Diego, California, in 21 hours and 19 minutes, making only one refueling stop at Kelly Field. The U. Army awarded him the Distinguished Flying Cross. Doolittle in a pre-World War II photo Within days after the transcontinental flight, he was at the Air Service Engineering School (a precursor to the Air Force Institute of Technology) at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio. For Doolittle, the school assignment had special significance: "In the early '20s, there was not complete support between the flyers and the engineers. The pilots thought the engineers were a group of people who zipped slide rules back and forth, came out with erroneous results and bad aircraft; and the engineers thought the pilots were crazy – otherwise they wouldn't be pilots. So some of us who had previous engineering training were sent to the engineering school at old McCook Field.... After a year's training there in practical aeronautical engineering, some of us were sent on to MIT where we took advanced degrees in aeronautical engineering. I believe that the purpose was served, that there was thereafter a better understanding between pilots and engineers. " In July 1923, after serving as a test pilot and aeronautical engineer at McCook Field, Doolittle entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In March 1924, he conducted aircraft acceleration tests at McCook Field, which became the basis of his master's thesis and led to his second Distinguished Flying Cross. He received his S. M. in Aeronautics from MIT in June 1924. Because the Army had given him two years to get his degree and he had done it in just one, he immediately started working on his Sc. D. in Aeronautics, which he received in June 1925. His doctorate in aeronautical engineering was the first ever issued in the United States. [6] He said that he considered his master's work more significant than his doctorate. Following graduation, Doolittle attended special training in high-speed seaplanes at Naval Air Station Anacostia in Washington, D. C.. He also served with the Naval Test Board at Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York, and was a familiar figure in air speed record attempts in the New York area. He won the Schneider Cup race in a Curtiss R3C in 1925 with an average speed of 232 MPH. [7] For that feat, Doolittle was awarded the Mackay Trophy in 1926. In April 1926, Doolittle was given a leave of absence to go to South America to perform demonstration flights. In Chile, he broke both ankles, but put his P-1 Hawk through aerial maneuvers with his ankles in casts. He returned to the United States, and was confined to Walter Reed Army Hospital for his injuries until April 1927. Doolittle was then assigned to McCook Field for experimental work, with additional duty as an instructor pilot to the 385th Bomb Squadron of the Air Corps Reserve. During this time, in 1927 he was the first to perform an outside loop, previously thought to be a fatal maneuver. Carried out in a Curtiss fighter at Wright Field in Ohio, Doolittle executed the dive from 10, 000 feet, reached 280 miles per hour, bottomed out upside down, then climbed and completed the loop. Instrument flight [ edit] Doolittle's most important contribution to aeronautical technology were his early contributions to instrument flying. He was the first to recognize that true operational freedom in the air could not be achieved unless pilots developed the ability to control and navigate aircraft in flight, from takeoff run to landing rollout, regardless of the range of vision from the cockpit. Doolittle was the first to envision that a pilot could be trained to use instruments to fly through fog, clouds, precipitation of all forms, darkness, or any other impediment to visibility; and in spite of the pilot's own possibly convoluted motion sense inputs. Even at this early stage, the ability to control aircraft was getting beyond the motion sense capability of the pilot. That is, as aircraft became faster and more maneuverable, pilots could become seriously disoriented without visual cues from outside the cockpit, because aircraft could move in ways that pilots' senses could not accurately decipher. Doolittle was also the first to recognize these psycho-physiological limitations of the human senses (particularly the motion sense inputs, i. e., up, down, left, right). He initiated the study of the subtle interrelationships between the psychological effects of visual cues and motion senses. His research resulted in programs that trained pilots to read and understand navigational instruments. A pilot learned to "trust his instruments, " not his senses, as visual cues and his motion sense inputs (what he sensed and "felt") could be incorrect or unreliable. In 1929, he became the first pilot to take off, fly and land an airplane using instruments alone, without a view outside the cockpit. Having returned to Mitchel Field that September, he assisted in the development of fog flying equipment. He helped develop, and was then the first to test, the now universally used artificial horizon and directional gyroscope. He attracted wide newspaper attention with this feat of "blind" flying and later received the Harmon Trophy for conducting the experiments. These accomplishments made all-weather airline operations practical. Reserve status [ edit] In January 1930, he advised the Army on the construction of Floyd Bennett Field in New York City. Doolittle resigned his regular commission on February 15, 1930, and was commissioned a Major in the Air Reserve Corps a month later, being named manager of the Aviation Department of Shell Oil Company, in which capacity he conducted numerous aviation tests. [8] While in the Reserve, he also returned to temporary active duty with the Army frequently to conduct tests. Doolittle helped influence Shell Oil Company to produce the first quantities of 100 octane aviation gasoline. High octane fuel was crucial to the high-performance planes that were developed in the late 1930s. In 1931, Doolittle won the first Bendix Trophy race from Burbank, California, to Cleveland, in a Laird Super Solution biplane. In 1932, Doolittle set the world's high speed record for land planes at 296 miles per hour in the Shell Speed Dash. Later, he took the Thompson Trophy race at Cleveland in the notorious Gee Bee R-1 racer with a speed averaging 252 miles per hour. After having won the three big air racing trophies of the time, the Schneider, Bendix, and Thompson, he officially retired from air racing stating, "I have yet to hear anyone engaged in this work dying of old age. " In April 1934, Doolittle was selected to be a member of the Baker Board. Chaired by former Secretary of War Newton D. Baker, the board was convened during the Air Mail scandal to study Air Corps organization. In 1940, he became president of the Institute of Aeronautical Science. Doolittle returned to active duty in the U. Army Air Corps on July 1, 1940 with rank of Major. He was assigned as the assistant district supervisor of the Central Air Corps Procurement District at Indianapolis, and Detroit, where he worked with large auto manufacturers on the conversion of their plants for production of planes. [9] The following August, he went to England as a member of a special mission and brought back information about other countries' air forces and military build-ups. Doolittle Raid [ edit] Then-Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle, USAAF (2nd left), and his Crew just before takeoff for the mission. From left to right: Lt. Henry A. Potter, navigator; Doolittle, pilot; SSgt. Fred A. Braemer, bombardier; Lt. Richard E. Cole, copilot; SSgt. Paul J. Leonard, flight engineer/gunner. On USS Hornet (CV-8), 18 April 1942. Lt. Doolittle (front), leader of the raiding force, wires a Japanese medal to a 500-pound bomb during ceremonies on the flight deck of USS Hornet (CV-8), shortly before his force of sixteen B-25B bombers took off to bomb Japan. The planes were launched on April 18, 1942. Following the reorganization of the Army Air Corps into the USAAF in June 1941, Doolittle was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 2, 1942, and assigned to Army Air Forces Headquarters to plan the first retaliatory air raid on the Japanese homeland following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He volunteered for and received General H. H. Arnold's approval to lead the top secret attack of 16 B-25 medium bombers from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, with targets in Tokyo, Kobe, Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya. After training at Eglin Field and Wagner Field in northwest Florida, Doolittle, his aircraft and volunteer flight crews proceeded to McClellan Field, California for aircraft modifications at the Sacramento Air Depot, followed by a short final flight to Naval Air Station Alameda, California for embarkation aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. On April 18, Doolittle and his 16 B-25 crews took off from the Hornet, reached Japan, and bombed their targets. Fifteen of the planes then headed for their recovery airfield in China, while one crew chose to land in Russia due to their bomber's unusually high fuel consumption. As did most of the other crewmen who participated in the one-way mission, Doolittle and his crew bailed out safely over China when their B-25 ran out of fuel. By then, they had been flying for about 12 hours, it was nighttime, the weather was stormy, and Doolittle was unable to locate their landing field. Doolittle came down in a rice paddy (saving a previously injured ankle from breaking) near Chuchow ( Quzhou). He and his crew linked up after the bailout and were helped through Japanese lines by Chinese guerrillas and American missionary John Birch. Other aircrews were not so fortunate, although most eventually reached safety with the help of friendly Chinese. Seven crew members lost their lives, four as a result of being captured and murdered by the Japanese and three due to an aircraft crash or while parachuting. Doolittle thought he would be court martialed due to having to launch the raid ahead of schedule after being spotted by Japanese patrol boats and the loss of all the aircraft. Doolittle went on to fly more combat missions as commander of the 12th Air Force in North Africa, for which he was awarded four Air Medals. He later commanded the 12th, 15th and 8th Air Forces in Europe. [10] The other surviving members of the Doolittle raid also went on to new assignments. Doolittle received the Medal of Honor from President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House for planning and leading his raid on Japan. His citation reads: "For conspicuous leadership above and beyond the call of duty, involving personal valor and intrepidity at an extreme hazard to life. With the apparent certainty of being forced to land in enemy territory or to perish at sea, Lt. Doolittle personally led a squadron of Army bombers, manned by volunteer crews, in a highly destructive raid on the Japanese mainland. " He was also promoted to brigadier general. [10] The Doolittle Raid is viewed by historians as a major morale-building victory for the United States. Although the damage done to Japanese war industry was minor, the raid showed the Japanese that their homeland was vulnerable to air attack, [11] and forced them to withdraw several front-line fighter units from Pacific war zones for homeland defense. More significantly, Japanese commanders considered the raid deeply embarrassing, and their attempt to close the perceived gap in their Pacific defense perimeter led directly to the decisive American victory at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. When asked from where the Tokyo raid was launched, President Roosevelt coyly said its base was Shangri-La, a fictional paradise from the popular novel Lost Horizon. In the same vein, the U. Navy named one of its Essex -class fleet carriers the USS Shangri-La. [10] World War II, post-raid [ edit] In July 1942, as a brigadier general —he had been promoted by two grades on the day after the Tokyo attack, bypassing the rank of full colonel —Doolittle was assigned to the nascent Eighth Air Force. This followed his rejection by General Douglas MacArthur as commander of the South West Pacific Area to replace Major General George Brett. Major General Frank Andrews first turned down the position, and, offered a choice between George Kenney and Doolittle, MacArthur chose Kenney. [12] In September, Doolittle became commanding general of the Twelfth Air Force, soon to be operating in North Africa. He was promoted to major general in November 1942, and in March 1943 became commanding general of the Northwest African Strategic Air Force, a unified command of U. Army Air Force and Royal Air Force units. In September, he commanded a raid against the Italian town of Battipaglia that was so thorough in its destruction that General Carl Andrew Spaatz sent him a joking message: "You're slipping Jimmy. There's one crabapple tree and one stable still standing. " [13] Maj. Gen. Doolittle took command of the Fifteenth Air Force in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations in November 1943. On June 10, he flew as co-pilot with Jack Sims, fellow Tokyo Raider, in a B-26 Marauder of the 320th Bombardment Group, 442nd Bombardment Squadron on a mission to attack gun emplacements at Pantelleria. Doolittle continued to fly, despite the risk of capture, while being privy to the Ultra secret, which was that the German encryption systems had been broken by the British. [14] From January 1944 to September 1945, he held his largest command, the Eighth Air Force (8 AF) in England as a lieutenant general, his promotion date being March 13, 1944 and the highest rank ever held by an active reserve officer in modern times. Doolittle's breakthrough in fighter tactics [ edit] Doolittle's major influence on the European air war occurred late in 1943 when he changed the policy requiring escorting fighters to remain with their bombers at all times, allowing fighter escorts to fly far ahead of the bombers' combat box formations in air supremacy mode. Throughout most of 1944, this tactic negated the effectiveness of the twin-engined Zerstörergeschwader heavy fighter wings and single-engined Sturmgruppen of heavily armed Fw 190As by clearing the Luftwaffe 's bomber destroyers from ahead of the bomber formations. After the bombers had hit their targets, the American fighters were free to strafe German airfields and transportation on their return to base. These tasks were initially performed with Lockheed P-38 Lightnings and Republic P-47 Thunderbolts through the end of 1943. They were progressively replaced with the long-ranged North American P-51 Mustangs as the spring of 1944 wore on. [15] [16] Post-VE Day [ edit] Personalized photo of General Jimmy Doolittle After the end of war on Europe, the Eighth Air Force was re-equipped with B-29 Superfortress bombers and started to relocate to Okinawa in southern Japan. Two bomb groups had begun to arrive on August 7. However, the 8th was not scheduled to be at full strength until February 1946 and Doolittle declined to rush 8th Air Force units into combat saying that "If the war is over, I will not risk one airplane nor a single bomber crew member just to be able to say the 8th Air Force had operated against the Japanese in Asia. " Postwar [ edit] Doolittle Board [ edit] Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson asked Doolittle on March 27, 1946 to head a commission on the relationships between officers and enlisted men in the Army called the "Doolittle Board" or the "GI Gripes Board". The Army implemented many of the board's recommendations for the postwar volunteer Army, [17] though many professional officers and noncommissioned officers thought that the Board "destroyed the discipline of the Army". [18] Columnist Hanson Baldwin said that the Doolittle Board "caused severe damage to service effectiveness by recommendations intended to 'democratize' the Army—a concept that is self-contradictory". [19] U. space program [ edit] Doolittle became acquainted with the field of space science in its infancy. He wrote in his autobiography, "I became interested in rocket development in the 1930s when I met Robert H. Goddard, who laid the foundation [in the US].... While with Shell [Oil] I worked with him on the development of a type of [rocket] fuel.... " [20] Harry Guggenheim, whose foundation sponsored Goddard's work, and Charles Lindbergh, who encouraged Goddard's efforts, arranged for (then Major) Doolittle to discuss with Goddard a special blend of gasoline. Doolittle piloted himself to Roswell, New Mexico in October 1938 and was given a tour of Goddard's workshop and a "short course" in rocketry and space travel. He then wrote a memo, including a rather detailed description of Goddard's rocket. In closing he said, "interplanetary transportation is probably a dream of the very distant future, but with the moon only a quarter of a million miles away—who knows! " [21] In July 1941 he wrote Goddard that he was still interested in rocket propulsion research. The Army, however, was interested only in JATO at this point. Doolittle was concerned about the state of rocketry in the US and remained in touch with Goddard. [21]: 1443 Shortly after World War II, Doolittle spoke to an American Rocket Society conference at which a large number interested in rocketry attended. The topic was Robert Goddard's work. He later stated that at that time "... we [the aeronautics field in the US] had not given much credence to the tremendous potential of rocketry. [22] In 1956, he was appointed chairman of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) because the previous chairman, Jerome C. Hunsaker, thought Doolittle to be more sympathetic to the rocket, which was increasing in importance as a scientific tool as well as a weapon. [20]: 516 The NACA Special Committee on Space Technology was organized in January 1958 and chaired by Guy Stever to determine the requirements of a national space program and what additions were needed to NACA technology. Doolittle, Dr. Hugh Dryden and Stever selected committee members, such as Dr. Wernher von Braun from the Army Ballistic Missile Agency, Sam Hoffman of Rocketdyne, Abe Hyatt of the Office of Naval Research and Colonel Norman Appold from the USAF missile program, considering their potential contributions to US space programs and ability to educate NACA people in space science. [23] On 5 January 1946, Doolittle reverted to inactive reserve status in the Army Air Forces in the grade of lieutenant general, a rarity in those days when nearly all other reserve officers were limited to the rank of major general or rear admiral, a restriction that would not end in the US armed forces until the 21st century. He retired from the United States Army on 10 May 1946. On 18 September 1947, his reserve commission as a general officer was transferred to the newly established United States Air Force. Doolittle returned to Shell Oil as a vice president, and later as a director. In the summer of 1946, Doolittle went to Stockholm where he was consulted about the " ghost rockets " that had been observed over Scandinavia. [24] In 1947, Doolittle also became the first president of the Air Force Association, an organization which he helped create. In 1948, Doolittle advocated the desegregation of the US military. "I am convinced", emphasized Doolittle, "that the solution to the situation is to forget that they are colored. " Industry was in the process of integrating, Doolittle said, "and it is going to be forced on the military. You are merely postponing the inevitable and you might as well take it gracefully. " [25] In March 1951, Doolittle was appointed a special assistant to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, serving as a civilian in scientific matters which led to Air Force ballistic missile and space programs. In 1952, following a string of three air crashes in two months at Elizabeth, New Jersey, the President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, appointed him to lead a presidential commission examining the safety of urban airports. The report "Airports and Their Neighbors" led to zoning requirements for buildings near approaches, early noise control requirements, and initial work on "super airports" with 10, 000 ft runways, suited to 150 ton aircraft. Doolittle was appointed a life member of the MIT Corporation, the university's board of trustees, an uncommon permanent appointment, and served as an MIT Corporation Member for 40 years. [26] In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower asked Doolittle to perform a study of the Central Intelligence Agency; The resulting work was known as the Doolittle Report, 1954, and was classified for a number of years. In January 1956, Eisenhower asked Doolittle to serve as a member on the first edition of the President's Board of Consultants on Foreign Intelligence Activities which, years later, would become known as the President's Intelligence Advisory Board. [ citation needed] From 1957 to 1958, he was chairman of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). This period was during the events of Sputnik, Vanguard and Explorer. He was the last person to hold this position, as the NACA was superseded by NASA. Doolittle was offered the job of being the first administrator of NASA, but he turned it down. [27] Doolittle retired from Air Force Reserve duty on February 28, 1959. He remained active in other capacities, including chairman of the board of TRW Space Technology Laboratories. In 1972, Doolittle received the Tony Jannus Award for his distinguished contributions to commercial aviation, in recognition of the development of instrument flight. On April 4, 1985, the U. Congress promoted Doolittle to the rank of full four-star general (O-10) on the U. Air Force retired list. In a later ceremony, President Ronald Reagan and U. Senator and retired Air Force Reserve Major General Barry Goldwater pinned on Doolittle's four-star insignia. In addition to his Medal of Honor for the Tokyo raid, Doolittle received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, two Distinguished Service Medals, the Silver Star, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star Medal, four Air Medals, and decorations from Belgium, China, Ecuador, France, Great Britain, and Poland. He was the first American to be awarded both the Medal of Honor and the Medal of Freedom. Doolittle also was awarded the Public Welfare Medal from the National Academy of Sciences in 1959. [28] In 1983, he was awarded the United States Military Academy 's Sylvanus Thayer Award. He was inducted in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America as the only member of the air racing category in the inaugural class of 1989, and into the Aerospace Walk of Honor in the inaugural class of 1990. [29] The headquarters of the United States Air Force Academy Association of Graduates (AOG) on the grounds of the United States Air Force Academy is named Doolittle Hall. On May 9, 2007, The new 12th Air Force Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC), Building 74, at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, was named in his honor as the "General James H. Doolittle Center". Several surviving members of the Doolittle Raid were in attendance during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Personal life [ edit] Doolittle photographed in 1986 Doolittle married Josephine "Joe" E. Daniels on December 24, 1917. At a dinner celebration after Jimmy Doolittle's first all-instrument flight in 1929, Josephine Doolittle asked her guests to sign her white damask tablecloth. Later, she embroidered the names in black. She continued this tradition, collecting hundreds of signatures from the aviation world. The tablecloth was donated to the Smithsonian Institution. Married for over 70 years, Josephine Doolittle died in 1988, five years before her husband. The Doolittles had two sons, James Jr., and John. Both became military officers and pilots. James Jr. was an A-26 Invader pilot in the U. Army Air Forces during World War II and later a fighter pilot in the U. Air Force in the late 1940s through the late 1950s. He died by suicide at the age of thirty-eight in 1958. [30] At the time of his death, James Jr. was a Major and commander of the 524th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, piloting the F-101 Voodoo. [31] His other son, John P. Doolittle, retired from the Air Force as a Colonel, and his grandson, Colonel James H. Doolittle III, was the vice commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California. James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle died at the age of 96 in Pebble Beach, California on September 27, 1993, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, near Washington, D. C., next to his wife. [32] In his honor at the funeral, there was also a flyover of Miss Mitchell, a lone B-25 Mitchell, and USAF Eighth Air Force bombers from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. After a brief graveside service, fellow Doolittle Raider Bill Bower began the final tribute on the bugle. When emotion took over, Doolittle's great-grandson, Paul Dean Crane, Jr., played Taps. [33] Doolittle was initiated to the Scottish Rite Freemasonry, [34] [35] where he took the 33rd degree, [36] [37] becoming also a Shriner. A reboot of the original Doctor Dolittle film and its modern comedy counterparts, the film is based on the titular character created by Hugh Lofting, and primarily inspired by The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, the author's second Doctor Dolittle book. Robert Downey Jr. stars as the title character, alongside Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen in live action roles, and a voice cast including Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, Tom Holland, Craig Robinson, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, and Marion Cotillard. The project was announced in March 2017 with Downey set to star, and the rest of the cast joined over the following year. Filming began in March 2018 and lasted through June, taking place around the United Kingdom. The film underwent three weeks of reshoots in the spring of 2019, under the supervision of Jonathan Liebesman and Chris McKay, after initial test screenings yielded poor results. Dolittle was theatrically released in the United States on January 17, 2020, by Universal Pictures. The film received negative reviews from critics, criticizing its screenplay, plot, humor, and visuals. Having grossed $218 million worldwide, it is currently the third highest-grossing film of 2020, though against a production budget of $175 million the film became a box office bomb, with estimated losses for the studio at $50–100 million. Plot [ edit] Dr. John Dolittle ( Robert Downey Jr. ) is a veterinarian who has the ability to communicate with animals. After his wife, Lily ( Kasia Smutniak) dies at sea, Dolittle becomes a recluse, tending to only animals and refusing to contact or assist with other humans. One day, a boy named Tommy Stubbins ( Harry Collett), accidentally shoots and wounds a squirrel named Kevin ( Craig Robinson), and is guided to Dolittle for help by Polynesia the Macaw ( Emma Thompson). Meanwhile, Queen Victoria ( Jessie Buckley), sends a message, ordering Dolittle to come in order to try to cure her of a deadly sickness. After being persuaded by Polynesia that he has to start trying to reconnect with other human beings, Dolittle finally decides to go. Upon reaching her, he finds that the Queen has been poisoned by a type of nightshade that was added to her tea. To be cured, she must eat a fruit from a far away land. Dolittle, Tommy, (who Polynesia, Betsy the giraffe ( Selena Gomez) and Tutu the fox ( Marion Cotillard) help escape from his home) and Dolittle's crew of animals, consisting of Polynesia, Kevin, Chee-Chee the gorilla ( Rami Malek), Yoshi the polar bear ( John Cena), Plimpton the ostrich ( Kumail Nanjiani) and Dab-Dab the duck ( Octavia Spencer) put to sail, hoping to find the cure while trying to escape Dolittle's lifelong rival, Dr. Blair Müdfly ( Michael Sheen). Dolittle leaves his dog, Jip ( Tom Holland), and a walking stick insect behind to guard the Queen while he's traveling. Along the way, Dolittle's boat is attacked by Müdfly, but they manage to escape by attaching a harness to a humpback whale that pulls the boat to safety. They continue to the island where Lily was born. While attempting to steal Lily's journal which details the way to the fruit tree, Dolittle is captured by King Rassouli ( Antonio Banderas), his former father-in-law, and is locked in a cage with Barry ( Ralph Fiennes), a hot-tempered tiger only looking for his mother's approval. Just when it seems Dolittle is to be killed, Chee-Chee arrives and incapacitates Barry. Dolittle and Stubbins escape only to be captured by Müdfly and have their ship destroyed. After seeing a crest-fallen Dolittle, Rassouli loans him a boat to honour his daughter. Trailing Müdfly, Dolittle and company arrive at the cure tree's island, where they meet Ginko-Who-Soars ( Frances de la Tour), a dragon. Ginko begins attacking before she collapses due to internal pain. Dolittle figures out what is hurting the dragon and proceeds to remove armour and bagpipes (from previously eaten trespassers) from her behind. Relieved and thankful, Ginko shows Dolittle the tree with the cure, and Dolittle's entourage returns just in time to heal the queen. Dolittle’s walking stick insect reveals that Lord Thomas Badgley ( Jim Broadbent), one of the Queen's chairmen, poisoned her in order to take the crown for himself; the queen has him arrested for treason. Dolittle re-opens the doors to his sanctuary, now including Stubbins as his official apprentice. In a mid-credits scene, we see Müdfly trying to communicate with bats that turn around and attack him. Cast [ edit] Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. John Dolittle, a widowed veterinarian who has the ability to speak to animals. Harry Collett as Tommy Stubbins, Dolittle's self-appointed apprentice. Antonio Banderas as Rassouli, the king of pirates, who was Lily's father and Dolittle’s father-in-law. Michael Sheen as Dr. Blair Müdfly, an old schoolmate and rival of Dolittle who gradually becomes impressed by Dolittle's special ability. Jim Broadbent as Lord Thomas Badgley, one of the Queen's dishonest chairmen. Jessie Buckley as Queen Victoria, the Queen of England. Carmel Laniado as Lady Rose, a maid of honor to the Queen and Tommy's friend. Kasia Smutniak as Lily Dolittle, Dolittle's deceased wife. [5] Ralph Ineson as Arnall Stubbins, Tommy's uncle. Joanna Page as Bethan Stubbins, Tommy's aunt. Sonny Ashbourne Serkis as Arnall Stubbins Jr., Tommy's cousin. Voices [ edit] Emma Thompson as Polynesia, an intelligent and brave macaw and Dolittle’s most trusted advisor. Rami Malek as Chee-Chee, a cowardly but loyal gorilla. John Cena as Yoshi, a happy-go-lucky but always cold polar bear who wears a chullo. Kumail Nanjiani as Plimpton, a mischievous and critical but good-natured ostrich who wears striped stockings and quarrels with Yoshi. Octavia Spencer as Dab-Dab, a helpful but deluded duck with a metal leg. Tom Holland as Jip, a friendly lurcher who wears glasses. Craig Robinson as Kevin, a cheeky-chappy squirrel with attitude. Ralph Fiennes as Barry, an aggressive tiger who has a past with Dolittle. Selena Gomez as Betsy, a hard-working giraffe. Marion Cotillard as Tutu, a French fox who is best friends with Betsy. Jason Mantzoukas as James, a comic relief dragonfly who meets Dolittle in a prison cell from which he helps him escape. Frances de la Tour as Ginko-Who-Soars, a fire-breathing dragon who guards a magical fruit. Nick A. Fisher as Mini, a cute sugar glider. Production [ edit] On March 20, 2017, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. would star in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, a feature adaptation of The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle. [6] In December 2017, Harry Collett and Jim Broadbent were cast. [7] [8] In February 2018, Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen were cast in live-action roles, while Tom Holland, Emma Thompson, Ralph Fiennes, and Selena Gomez were cast to voice animals, including a tiger, bear, and a lioness. [9] [10] In March 2018, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, John Cena, Rami Malek, Craig Robinson, Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour and Carmen Ejogo joined the voice cast. [11] The character of Regine, a lioness voiced by Ejogo, was cut from the finished film. [ citation needed] Principal production commenced mid-February in 2018. Live-action scenes began filming in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria in May 2018, with further location filming at South Forest, Windsor Great Park and on the Menai Suspension Bridge in North West Wales, in June 2018. [12] In April 2019, it was reported the film had undergone 21 days of re-shoots following poor test screenings. Director Jonathan Liebesman helped to oversee the filming alongside Gaghan, while Chris McKay helped write new material after it became clear from first cuts that the comedy elements of the film were not coming together as well as the producers had hoped. [2] Prior to this, Universal had turned towards Seth Rogen and Neighbors co-writer Brendan O'Brien to help make the film funnier. However, neither could remain committed to the project and dropped out. McKay was assigned to storyboard sequences and assemble different edits before later leaving to instead direct The Tomorrow War. Liebesman took over McKay's duties and finished the film alongside Gaghan. The Lego Batman Movie scribe John Whittington had performed rewrites on the script amid reshoots and had flown to London to meet with Downey, who allegedly tore Whittington's script apart in favor of "new ideas". The Hollywood Reporter claims that despite a "challenged production" there were no fights for power and no competing cuts for the film. [13] In August 2019, it was reported that the film's title had been changed from The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle to simply Dolittle. [14] In January 2020, Robert Downey Jr discussed on Joe Rogan 's podcast ( The Joe Rogan Experience) that the premise of the Dr. Dolittle character in his film stemmed from a Welsh neo-pagan physician called William Price. In the podcast he said: "Same way I did with Iron Man.. all right there's something here and then before I signed on, I was just googling 'weirdest Welsh doctor', I just wanted to think of, I don't want to just do another English accent.. so there was this guy called William Price, who's a nutty Welsh doctor, he was a neo-druidist, he believed that he could communicate with all nature and all that stuff, so I sent a picture of this wild looking guy wearing this kind of suit with stars on it and like a staff in his hand, so I sent that to Gaghan and he goes, "That looks good to me" and I was like "great let's do this movie"". [15] Music artist Sia performed a new song of hers called " Original " for the end credits, while Danny Elfman composed the film's score. [16] Release [ edit] The film was originally going to be released on May 24, 2019, by Universal Pictures but was moved to April 12, 2019, to avoid competition with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (which was later moved to December 20, 2019). Home media [ edit] Dolittle is scheduled to be released on Digital HD on March 24, 2020 and on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray on April 7, 2020. [17] Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] As of March 6, 2020, Dolittle has grossed $76. 6 million in the United States and Canada, and $141. 4 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $218 million, against a production budget of $175 million. [3] [4] Due to its high production and marketing costs, the film will need to gross around $500 million in order to break-even; [18] following its debut weekend, it was estimated the film would lose the studio between $50–100 million. [19] [20] In the United States and Canada, the film was projected to gross $20–22 million from 4, 155 theaters in its opening weekend, and a total of around $27 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. [21] [22] It made $6. 3 million on its first day, including $925, 000 from Thursday night previews. It went on to debut to $22 million (and $29. 5 million over the four-day frame), finishing third behind fellow newcomer Bad Boys for Life and holdover 1917. [19] The film made $12. 1 million in its second weekend and $7. 7 million in its third, remaining in third both times. [23] [24] Critical response [ edit] On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 15% based on 209 reviews with an average rating of 3. 85/10. The website's critics consensus reads: " Dolittle may be enough to entertain very young viewers, but they deserve better than this rote adaptation's jumbled story and stale humor. " [25] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 26 out of 100, based on 45 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". [26] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B" on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak reported an average 3 out of 5 stars. [19] Courtney Howard of Variety called the film a "frenetic, crass kids' flick" and wrote: "What should have been an awe-filled adventure quickly curdles into an awful one, thanks to a pedestrian formula and the filmmakers' fixation on fart jokes. " [27] Writing for The Hollywood Reporter, Todd McCarthy said that "From the very first scene, it's clear something is terribly off with this lavishly misbegotten attempt to repopularize an animal-loaded literary franchise that was born exactly a century ago. The oddly diffident star and executive producer Robert Downey Jr. never finds the power-supplying third rail needed to energize a tale that fails to make a real case for being reinterpreted". [28] British film critic Mark Kermode gave the film a negative review, saying, "Terrible script. Terrible visuals. Dull plot. Dismal gags. The fact that at 101 minutes it really tested one's patience. It is shockingly poor. " He particularly criticized Robert Downey Jr. 's attempt at a Welsh accent, calling it "something from Mars. 8,4 / 10; Crime; Star=Sam Rockwell; Directors=Clint Eastwood; 131 minute; country=USA. The story follows a very humble guy who very unfortunately was mistook for a bad guy by the world. There was a couple of moments that touched people's heart. All in all a good movie. Looks like you are using an unsupported browser.

O caso richard jewell musicas. Casting, dialog, screenplay, and acting (bravo to Paul Hauser, Sam Rockwell, and Kathy Bates) combined to create a very entertaining, powerful, and nuanced story-telling, while at the same time recounting a sobering example of a self-serving, blatant abuse of power carelessly wielded by a handful of ego-driven governmental and media employees.
The sparing use of understated piano work on the musical sound track was perfectly executed and placed, a feature of other Eastwood (a jazz pianist) films.
Don't miss the two memorable lines toward the end of the movie which were spoken by Jewell's attorney just prior to them both entering a room for their final meeting with his FBI accusers.
What has become a rarity these days, this film from beginning to end is a well-told story well worth the price of admission.

O caso richard jewell imdb. Gee, are the government behind all these bombings just like the shootings that seem to happen time & again, those criminals suffer from madness big time. It's obvious they throw the blame on others to deflect it from themselves. O Caso Richard jewellery uk. I blame the big mouth cops. It is one thing to investigate the guy, but to release so much information to the media when you know what the stakes are, is unforgivable. Isnt it strange that when one of their own is accused of anything, and I mean, anything, they suddenly all go silent. O caso richard jewell wikipedia. O caso richard jewell. O caso richard jewell filme completo dublado. O caso richard jewell história. As the story wound down I didn't want it to end.
That is one of my main criteria for a good to great
film - I only gave it 9 starts because they didn't
give the option of 91/2 - 10 means it's absolutely
perfect - hard to attain perfection in the real world.
I very well remember that I was sucked into the
false narrative branding Richard Jewel a terrorist.
I must see movie in my book.

And the FBI lies to this Day. Assistir o caso richard jewell. Our government murders innocent people. And blames innocent people... Love this! Finally an anti-leftist movie! Thank you clint. O caso richard jewell filme. Como es de Clint Eatswood voy a ir a verla. 😀. O caso de richard jewell critica. Como é bom ouvir críticas do Dale. 👏🏼👏🏼. We all know what the movie is about... with all the controversial surrounding Kathy Scruggs (and Olivia Wilde's tweets. The movie is a typical Hollywood/Clint Eastwood drama with the version of truth be told by eyes of the beholder. in this case the Director. The acting is superbly done by all actors involved. The technical is average. The storytelling is predictable and one dimensional.
Clint Eastwood is (and has been) well-known for bending the truth, mixing facts and fictions in order to better dramatize his movies (think of Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, J. Edgar, Sully, American Sniper, etc. artistic license they call it in the business. It's okay if the movies are not labeled as a "True Story" based on "Facts. In this movie, Clint makes it like a true story... some sort of documentary, but the facts and the truths are far from it, especially when it comes to Kathy Scruggs. In making a film to vindicate and clear the name of one victim (Richard Jewell) he unnecessarily vilifies and throws another under the bus (Kathy Scruggs. and that make his movie harder to believe and even harder to watch.
All of these can be easily negated with just an acknowledgement of that this is a work of fiction, which he has been adamantly refused to do and Olivia Wilde who has been on Tweeter with one tweet after another in the defense of her character (with her own twists and lies) which end up with the admittance that she disagrees with the portrayed of Kathy Scruggs but has no saying in the movie direction. Shame on Clint Eastwood and Olivia Wilde along with the movie studio Warner Bros.
It's a travesty of justice for Richard Jewell done by the FBI and the news media, but also a travesty of justice for Kathy Scruggs done by this movie with Clint Eastwood, Olivia Wilde, and the studio Warner Bros as the bully and the liars.
