The director, Francois Girard, and, I suspect, the same Canadian production company were involved in the 1998 RED VIOLIN. Like that film it takes place over multiple time periods, in this film clearly stated to be 1951, 1986, and the earliest, unidentified time which can be inferred to be sometime between March and September 1939. The scene shifts back and forth a good deal and some critics found this confusing and destructive of continuity but I found no difficulty in following the story line. Memory is not linear and orderly but rather fragmented and out of sequence, particularly when dealing with highly charged emotionally traumatic experiences. This is an exceptionally intelligent screenplay where not everything has to be spelled out. It's true that a key plot point mystery is fairly predictable. Yet the story builds to a wrenching climax in a way you don't see every day in the movies.
Tim Roth plays well against type as a quiet, introspective Brit. The score composer, Howard Shore, was involved in composing the impressive music in the Lord of the Rings and does an award-deserving job here. I rate the film at 3.5/4 stars. Strongly recommended for everybody, especially any serious music student as well as anyone of Jewish background, particularly of GenX through to Millennials.

I was disappointing. This is quite a poorly done work. Another user reviwer here said the ending was "shocking." No it is not, it is predictable. In fact the entire film is a endless run of cliche.

However I don't quite get how the plot would work with a complete gender reversal. In the original the Indian orphanage manager is a man and the gender of the other two leads (the rich couple) is also reversed. This works great for the secret of the film but it could not possibly work if the gender of all three was reversed due to the nature of the secret. So my guess is that the secret of this remake is quite different and has nothing to do with (SPOILER. Either way I am not going to watch this. I strongly doubt it could surpass the original and since it can't what would be the point.

A film publicised by Fox advertising a comical Hitler sounds like it could be a headline describing the decade we just went through. The Song of. "The Song of Names" directed by the wonderful François Girard, surpassed all of my expectations! The story is about the relationship two "brothers" and how that relationship changes over the years as the mystery unfolds. The score, by the great Howard Shore, expertly showcases the film's haunting, mysterious tone. Acting, directing and cinematography, to name a few, were all brilliant. Certainly worth a watch, even if just for the magnificent violin solos! The film catches your attention from the very first scene and leaves you wanting more after the shocking finale. I would recommend this film to musicians, as well as anyone who loves a good character-based mystery.

I FINALLY got to see a show at the North Park, and I was thrilled that it was this one, Studio Ghibli’s The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.  Isao Takahata’s latest is a beautiful and heart-rending re-telling of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.  One day, a bamboo cutter sees a glowing stalk of bamboo in the forest.  In it, he finds a tiny girl, which he takes home to his wife.  The little ‘princess’ magically turns into a baby, one that grows extraordinarily quick, earning her the nickname ‘Little Bamboo’ from the village children. The bamboo cutter finds more glowing stalks in the forest, filled with gold and fine silks.  He takes little bamboo away from the village and to the capital, building a fine mansion with servants and a governess to teach her the ways of nobility.  She pushes back against the strict behavior rules for girls and women, longing for the village where she could be free and happy. As she gets older, the rumors of her beauty spread, and she and her father have to deal with suitors for her hand in marriage.  Again she balks at society’s rules for how she should look and get married, and she manages to hold off the five government ministers who came calling with some cleverness on her part.  This draws the attention of the Emperor himself.  I won’t say more about the story so as not to spoil the more fantastical parts, but it is quite melancholy at the end. Without a doubt The Tale of the Princess Kaguya was one of the most beautifully animated movies I’ve ever seen.  The watercolor style, which shifts to rough slashing pencils and blasts of color when Kaguya is running and angry are amazing.  If you are tired of all the 3D animated stuff out there, this is a welcome change. For those taking children, the English dub is star-studded and quite solid as is usual for Studio Ghibli – James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, and Lucy Liu are great, as is Chloë Grace Moretz as the princess.  I did not make it to see the subtitled version.  Also, the movie is quite long, though my 6 year old daughter and I barely noticed.  If you can see it on the big screen, DO IT!  Otherwise, buy a Blu-Ray and watch it – just make sure you have tissues handy for the more sensitive among you.

My biggest turndown with Invisible Life's biggest competition inside Brazil this year ( Bacurau' was the excess of metaphors to make it a smart work. some of which have absolutely no contibution to the story. Still, it was able to provoke a lot of emotional reactions, it's specially smart and meaningful to watch from a Brazilian perspective. Invisible Life is something different, it's universal, delicate and rough at the same time, and it's story has no need to explaining. we all know what it is about. Still, they explain (the only reason why it's not a 100% for me.

You can't issue commands to your wingmen, program specific targets, or even set the amount of energy devoted to weapons or shields. Speaking of shields, you'll have to first hold down the spacebar in order to activate them. It's strange when you're in the middle of a fight to think about pressing a key for protection, especially since you can still fire your standard cannons while they are activated. Use of your shields does wear out your ship's energy, however, so it's best to save them for whenever the enemy fires heat-seeking missiles. The missions start off simple, with training lessons to get you accustomed to piloting your ship, and then you'll soon be blasting away at swarms of enemy fighters. You can switch between three primary views during flight: cockpit, behind the ship, or an external diagonal view. If you die, there aren't any branching missions, so it's back to the drawing board until you complete your objective. Unfortunately, there's not much else to keep single players occupied after flying the missions: you can't save your score, kill statistics or pilot records. While LAN support helps extend the replay value somewhat, there's not much to it. Up to six players just fly around trying to blast each other to particle dust -- there aren't any cooperative missions to go through, there's only one arena, and you can't play over the Internet. Had Darklight Conflict included Internet support, a dynamic mission campaign, as well as a variety of game modes to bolster its multiplayer aspect, the title would have rated higher. Darklight Conflict is still worth your time if you want something to keep you busy until the next LucasArts or Wing Commander title comes out, but there are too many missing ingredients to satisfy most space vets. Graphics: The graphics are arguably the best part of the game. Special effects such as light-sourcing and lens flares along with a crisp SVGA display makes you feel like you're in space. [16] [a] Temperature distribution in a lake in summer and winter The unusual density curve and lower density of ice than of water is vital to life—if water were most dense at the freezing point, then in winter the very cold water at the surface of lakes and other water bodies would sink, the lake could freeze from the bottom up, and all life in them would be killed. [16] Furthermore, given that water is a good thermal insulator (due to its heat capacity), some frozen lakes might not completely thaw in summer. [16] The layer of ice that floats on top insulates the water below. [16] The density of sea water depends on the dissolved salt content as well as the temperature. Ice still floats in the oceans, otherwise they would freeze from the bottom up. [18] This is why, in ocean water, the downward convection of colder water is not blocked by an expansion of water as it becomes colder near the freezing point. The oceans' cold water near the freezing point continues to sink. So creatures that live at the bottom of cold oceans like the Arctic Ocean generally live in water 4 °C colder than at the bottom of frozen-over fresh water lakes and rivers. As the surface of sea water begins to freeze (at −1. 9 °C for salinity 3. 5%) the ice that forms is essentially salt-free, with about the same density as freshwater ice. [18] This ice floats on the surface, and the salt that is "frozen out" adds to the salinity and density of the sea water just below it, in a process known as brine rejection. This denser salt water sinks by convection. This produces essentially freshwater ice at −1. 9 °C on the surface. [18] On a large scale, the process of brine rejection and sinking cold salty water results in ocean currents forming to transport such water away from the Poles, leading to a global system of currents called the thermohaline circulation. Pressure [ edit] The density of water causes ambient pressures that increase dramatically with depth. The atmospheric pressure at the surface is 14. 7 pounds per square inch or around 100 kPa. If the overall density of the object exceeds the density of water, the object sinks. If the overall density is less than the density of water, the object rises until it floats on the surface. With increasing depth underwater, sunlight is absorbed, and the amount of visible light diminishes. White objects at the surface appear bluish underwater, and red objects appear dark, even black. Although light penetration will be less if water is turbid, in the very clear water of the open ocean less than 25% of the surface light reaches a depth of 10 m (33 feet). At 100 m (330 ft) the light present from the sun is normally about 0. 5% of that at the surface. This depth is dependent upon water clarity, being only a few metres underwater in a turbid estuary, but may reach up to 200 metres in the open ocean. Temperature [ edit] There are three layers of ocean temperature: the surface layer, the thermocline, and the deep ocean. The average temperature of surface layer is about 17 °C. About 90% of ocean's water is below the thermocline in the deep ocean, where most of the water is below 4 °C. The World Ocean is the habitat of 230, 000 known species, but because much of it is unexplored, the number of species that exist in the ocean is much larger, possibly over two million. [24] Freshwater ecosystems include lakes and ponds, rivers, streams, springs, aquifers, bogs, and wetlands. They have a lower salt content than marine ecosystems. Freshwater habitats can be classified by different factors, including temperature, light penetration, nutrients, and vegetation. Freshwater ecosystems can be divided into lentic ecosystems (still water) and lotic ecosystems (flowing water). [25] Aquatic ecosystems are characterised by the limitation on ambient lighting due to absorption by the water itself and by dissolved and suspended matter in the water column, and by the support provided by buoyancy. ( August 2019) Humans in the underwater environment [ edit] Although a number of human activities are conducted underwater—such as research, underwater diving for work or recreation, and underwater warfare with submarines, the underwater environment is hostile to humans in many ways and therefore little explored. An immediate obstacle to human activity under water is that human lungs cannot naturally function in this environment. Unlike the gills of fish, human lungs are adapted to the exchange of gases at atmospheric pressure. Any penetration into the underwater environment for more than a few minutes requires artificial aids to maintain life. For solid and liquid tissues like bone, muscle and blood, the high ambient pressure is not much of a problem; but it is a problem for any gas-filled spaces like the mouth, ears, paranasal sinuses and lungs. This is because the gas in those spaces is much more compressible than the solids and liquids, and reduces in volume much more when under pressure and so does not provide those spaces with support against the higher outside pressure. Even at a depth of 8 ft (2. 4 m) underwater, an inability to equalize air pressure in the middle ear with outside water pressure can cause pain, and the tympanic membrane (eardrum) can rupture at depths under 10 ft (3 m). The danger of pressure damage is greatest in shallow water because the ratio of pressure change is greatest near the surface of the water. The raised pressure also affects the solution of breathing gases in the tissues over time, and can lead to a range of adverse effects, such as inert gas narcosis, and oxygen toxicity. Decompression must be controlled to avoid bubble formation in the tissues and the consequent symptoms of decompression sickness. With a few exceptions, the underwater environment tends to cool the unprotected human body. This heat loss will generally lead to hypothermia eventually. Hazards of the underwater environment [ edit] There are several classes of hazards to humans inherent to the underwater environment. Absence of breathable gas, which can cause asphyxia, specifically by drowning. Ambient pressures which could cause barotrauma, or toxic effects of breathing gas components at raised partial pressures. Ambient temperatures which may lead to hypothermia, or in unusual cases, to hyperthermia, due to high rates of heat exchange. Solution of inert breathing gas components may lead to decompression sickness if decompression is too rapid. Entrainment of diver by moving water in currents and waves can cause injury by impacting the diver against hard objects or moving them to inappropriate depths. Dangerous aquatic organisms of various sorts. Ambient pressure diving [ edit] Tektite I underwater habitat with ambient pressure divers using scuba In ambient pressure diving, the diver is directly exposed to the pressure of the surrounding water. The ambient pressure diver may dive on breath-hold, or use breathing apparatus for scuba diving or surface-supplied diving, and the saturation diving technique reduces the risk of decompression sickness (DCS) after long-duration deep dives. Immersion in water and exposure to cold water and high pressure have physiological effects on the diver which limit the depths and duration possible in ambient pressure diving. Breath-hold endurance is a severe limitation, and breathing at high ambient pressure adds further complications, both directly and indirectly. Technological solutions have been developed which can greatly extend depth and duration of human ambient pressure dives, and allow useful work to be done underwater. [26] Atmospheric pressure diving [ edit] The Newtsuit has fully articulated, rotary joints in the arms and legs. These provide great mobility, while remaining largely unaffected by high pressures. A diver can be isolated from the ambient pressure by using an atmospheric diving suit (ADS), which is a small one-person articulated anthropomorphic submersible which resembles a suit of armour, with elaborate pressure resisting joints to allow articulation while maintaining an internal pressure of one atmosphere. An ADS can be used for relatively deep dives of up to 2, 300 feet (700 m) for many hours, and eliminates the majority of significant physiological dangers associated with deep diving; the occupant need not decompress, there is no need for special gas mixtures, nor is there danger of decompression sickness or nitrogen narcosis, and the diver is effectively isolated from most aquatic organisms. [27] Divers do not even need to be skilled swimmers, but mobility and dexterity are significantly degraded. There are many types of submersibles, including both manned and unmanned craft, otherwise known as remotely operated vehicles or ROVs. Прибыв в неизвестное захолустье, он представляется режиссером и заводит дружбу с местной официанткой с пуленепробиваемым лицом. По счастливой случайности девушка увлекается монтажом и с удовольствием соглашается принять участие в дебютном проекте Жоржа, поддержкой которого занимаются некие «продюсеры из Сибири». Сам Жорж тем временем постепенно слетает с катушек — его любовь к куртке, которая неожиданно заговаривает человеческим голосом, перерастает в одержимость смертоносного масштаба. Когда именно один жанр поглощает другой — непонятно. Общее настроение ленты, снятой в сепии, будто бы с легким оттенком старины, не меняется до самого финала. «Оленья кожа» Дюпье не стремится уходить от выбранной формы и в очередной раз фокусирует свое внимание на неодушевленных предметах, как уже делал в одном из своих самых известных фильмов « Шина » про, собственно, шину-убийцу, вырезающую людей на расстоянии. В новой картине Дюпье вещь все так же смертоносна, однако действует гораздо осторожней своей предшественницы, отказываясь пачкать руки (или бахрому) в крови. На этот раз куртка подчиняет своей воли глупого человечишку, который и рад придать своей жизни хоть какой-то смысл. Как бы между прочим за навесом из абсурдного юмора и груды мертвых тел скрывается вполне себе злободневная экологическая тема — только вот подана она слишком вразброс, да и сложно в этой какофонии даже при большом желании различить хотя бы пару серьезных нот. Уже очевидная законсервированность Дюпье в собственной кинематографической нише не мешает ему искать все новые и новые формы для самовыражения, которые «Оленья кожа» щедро предлагает зрителю, то и дело бросая вызов его морально-этическим принципам. К счастью, те, кто уже давно знаком с творчеством самобытного французского режиссера, будут только рады таким экспериментам на экране. Остальные тоже не останутся в накладе — авторский почерк Дюпье если и не произведет большого впечатления, то как минимум надолго осядет в памяти.
